Hoook., las abreviaciones a continuación de la especie, significan que Linneo (L.) describió la especie en el siglo antepasado; que Fries (Fr.) la actualizó en el siglo pasado, pero en ambos casos en otro género ajeno a Amanita; en particular, en el género Agaricus (Como Agaricus muscarius); de ahí que las abreviaciones L. y Fr. esten entre paréntesis  y entre ellas el prefijo "ex". He identified them as Basidiomycetes and, with the aid of his young assistant Roger Cailleux, he succeded in cultivating almost all of the fourteen species of Mexican hallucinogenic agarics in the Laboratoire de Cryptogramie in Paris, at first in sterile, artificial media, later in compost hosthouses, thus freeing us of our dependence on Mexico for our supply of raw material.
